Headlines and haiku are similar in that they
need to express something of consequence
in as few telling lines as possible.

Both deal with facts.
However the headlines are meant to alarm
whereas haiku are meant to provide
insight and reflection.

Today's headlines strongly suggest
that our sustaining natural environment
is in serious decline, and this is causing
great concern about the consequences.

Haiku — traditionally a meditation on
living within nature's processes and cycles —
thereby seem the perfect counterpoint,
offering up a reverential consideration of
that which we are in danger of losing.
