This flag was initially made to fly in
the city, and was flown there as a sort
of dream flag ... the dream being that
I could get out of that city and back
into the landscape. The landscape
was represented by the redwing
blackbird which spends summer in
the northern marshes. The redwing's
call has resonated with me since I was
a boy, and I still listen for it as a first
sign of spring and good weather.

At a time when the natural world is
under threat, I also wanted to make
an artwork that was in celebration of
nature. It is, above all, about the bird,
the sky, and the wind.
